Malala Yousafzai awarded 2013 International Children’s Peace Prize

Malala YousafzaiTeenage activist Malala Yousafzai (Pakistan), shot in the head by a Taliban militant last October after campaigning for girls right to education, has won the prestigious International Children’s Peace Prize, KidsRights announced on August 27, 2013.

The Pakistani 16-year-old will receive the award from 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner and women’s rights campaigner Tawakkol Karman at a glittering ceremony in The Hague on September 6, 2013.

Last year’s (2012) International Children’s Peace Prize winner was 13-year-old Cris Kesz Valdez (Philippines) for his work with Filipino street children while he himself was destitute.

The International Children’s Peace Prize is awarded annually to a child who has made a significant contribution to advocating children’s rights and improving the situation of vulnerable children such as orphans, child labourers and children with HIV/AIDS. 

The prize is an initiative of the KidsRights Foundation, an international children’s aid and advocacy organisation based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands., was launched in 2005 by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, when he chaired the Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Rome.
