Apurvi Chandela wins gold in Sweden with world record effort

Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela broke the world record on way to winning gold in the women’s 10 metre air rifle event at the Swedish Cup Grand Prix. Chandela shot 211.2 in the event held on Tuesday to surpass the feat of Chinese Olympic gold medallist Yi Siling, who held the record with 211. Chandela had won the gold in the National Championships held last month. She had won an Olympic quota place for India after winning a bronze in the ISSF World Cup in Changwon, Korea in April last year.

Apurvi Singh Chandela (born 4 January 1993) is an Indian shooter who competes in the 10 metre air rifle event. Apurvi was born to a Chandela Rajput family in Jaipur. Her father is Kuldeep Singh Chandela, a hotelier, and mother is Bindu Rathore. Her family is from Udaipur.

Commonwealth Games 2014 – India Happy With Top-5 Finish in Glasgow, Scotland

CWG 2014The 2014 Commonwealth Games (officially the XX Commonwealth Games) were held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014. There are 71 participating nations at the 2014 Commonwealth Games with approximately 4,950 competing athletes, making it one of the largest Commonwealth Games staged to date. Although there are 53 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 71 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flag. The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom-England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland-also send separate teams.

     FIFA World Cup Brasil 2014Mario Goetze scored a superb extra time winner as Germany beat Argentina 1-0 to become the first European team to win a World Cup held in South America. Germany has now won four World Cups, putting the European powerhouse just one behind Brazil’s record tally of five.

  • Golden Ball Award: Golden Ball was awarded to Argentina captain Lionel Messi for his outstanding displays at Brazil 2014.
  • Golden Boot Award: Golden Boot was awarded goes to the top goal scorer at the FIFA World Cup who at Brazil 2014 was Colombia’s James Rodriguez.

  • Golden Glove Award: Golden Glove was awarded to the tournament’s most outstanding goalkeeper who at Brazil 2014 was deemed to be Germany’s Manuel Neuer.

  • Young Player Award: Young Player award was awarded to France’s Paul Pogba for his excellent displays at Brazil 2014. 

  • Fair Play Award: The FIFA Fair Play Award will go to the team with the tournament’s best disciplinary record. Only teams that reach the knockout phase are eligible. Colombia won this award.

Indian men beat Pakistan to retain their title at Kabaddi World Cup 2013

India beat Pakistan 48-39 to emerge champions of the fourth World Cup Kabaddi played at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana on 14-12-2013.

The Indian men’s kabaddi team successfully defended their title at the 4th Kabaddi World Cup in a repeat of last year’s final as they beat Pakistan in Ludhiana (Punjab). Besides, the winner’s trophy, the hosts bagged a cash award of Rs two crore while Pakistan got the runners-up trophy and Rs one crore.

Dulla Bagga Pind was adjudged the best raider and Pala Jalapuria was named the Best Stopper.

India win Women’s Kabaddi World Cup 2013

JALANDHAR (Punjab): India clinched the women’s Kabaddi World Cup championship for the third time in a row, defeating debutant New Zealand 49-21 in the summit clash played at Guru Gobind Singh sports complex on 12-12-2013. It is the fourth edition of the World Kabaddi Cup.

The Indian team took home a first-place prize of Rs one crore. Anu Rani was adjudged the best stopper while Ram Bateri was declared the best raider. Both received a Maruti Alto car each.

Magnus Carlsen beats Viswanathan Anand to become world chess champion

CHENNAI: World Chess Championship 2013 – 22-year-old Magnus Carlsen (Norway) became the new world chess champion as he defeated defending champion Viswanathan Anand.

Five-time title-holder Viswanathan Anand’s reign as the world champion came to a heart-breaking end on Friday with Norway’s Magnus Carlsen taking the crown after a hard-fought draw in the 10th game of the World Chess Championship match, which ended on Friday (November 22, 2013).

Carlsen, who will be 23 years on 30th November, closed the championship with two games to spare by taking his tally to required 6.5 points out of a possible ten, winning three and drawing seven games.

Viswanathan Anand had won the world championship title five times – 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 – but ironically was dethroned in his home town of Chennai. Anand said he is “disappointed” and said sorry to his fans. “I was simply not able to execute my strategy,” he added.

Indian shooter Heena Sidhu creates history by winning ISSF World Cup gold

Woman shooter Heena Sidhu created history by becoming the first pistol exponent from India to win a gold medal at the International Sports Shooting Federation (ISSF) World Cup finals in Munich, Germany.

Heena SidhuHeena Sidhu (born: August 29, 1989) is a Punjabi and was born in Ludhiana. Her home town is Patiala.

Heena won the gold medal by beating double Olympic Champion Guo Wenjun from China, world champion Arunovic Zorana from Serbia and multiple Olympic medallist Olena Kostevych of Ukraine in a stiff competition. The ISSF World Cup is held once a year and features only top 10 shooters of the world.
