World Radio Day is on 13 February. It was originally proposed by Spain.
On November 3, 2011, the 36th General Conference of UNESCO approved the creation of the World Day of Radio. The initial idea came from the Spanish Academy of Radio four years ago, therefore, the Permanent Delegation of Spain to UNESCO formally present the proposal at the session 187 of UNESCO’s Executive Board in September 2011.
The main objectives of a World Radio Day would be as follows:
- To raise the understanding among the public and the media of the value of radio, including in the context of new media, and the value of actively supporting radio.
- To encourage decision-makers to support, establish and provide access to radio.
- To provide a networking focus for radio proponents and practitioners worldwide, to exchange ideas, experiences and resources.
- To highlight selected issues each year to radio practitioners and the public, galvanizing otherwise dispersed support.
