The United Nations Organization (UNO) and its main organs

The United Nations Organization officially came into existence on October 24, 1945. The Second World War ended in May 1945. The different nations of the world felt the need for a powerful organization, which would maintain peace in the world. With such a view the Charter of the United Nations was signed at Sanfrancisco in June 1945. Its headquarters was in New York. The main aim of the UNO is to maintain International peace and security, development of friendly relations among nations and to solve socio-economic and humanitarian problems. The work of the UNO is carried on by its six organs and specialized agencies. The main organs are:

  • General Assembly
  • Security Council
  • Economic and Social Council
  • Trusteeship Council
  • International Court of Justice
  • Secretariat

24th October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.
