Sikkim – India’s First ‘Nirmal State’

Sikkim has become first Nirmal State of the country. Sikkim has become the first state in the country to achieve 100% sanitation. It has been declared a ‘Nirmal State’ for being free of open defecation. Indian president Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil (the first woman to serve in the office) presented the state with a gold medal to mark its achievement at a ceremony on December 8, 2008.

In 2002, the government launched the Nirmal Gram Puraskar awards for municipalities that achieve total sanitation.
