World AIDS Day Observance (December 01) Started on 1st December 1988. The World AIDS Day theme for 2010 is ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. The awareness symbol is: Red Ribbon. AIDS Day from 2005 through 2010, the theme will be “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.” HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system – the body’s defence against diseases. HIV belongs is a lentivirus (a member of the retrovirus family) that causes AIDS. The 2010 target is also part of Millennium Development Goal 6 which includes the goal of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015.
